Acts Sermon Series
On Sunday, July 5, we began a 21 week study through the book of Acts. Each of our three preaching locations will hear sermons based on the same texts and themes each week. The purpose of the series is to help us understand more fully what it is to be church. Church is not simply a place to show up on Sundays, nor is it just a place to go to get spiritual advice, help when you're in trouble, or good feelings. Church is much more - it is a community of believers, which means that we should have similar cultural identifiers much like the communities you live in. Markers like baptism - its where you came from, where your life begins. Markers like Holy Communion - where you receive into your flesh the true body and blood of the only one who is truly alive, Jesus who died and was raised. Markers like fellowship - not just wishing each other a good morning over donuts and coffee, but discovering the needs your neighbor has and serving him or her in that need. To that end, we will examine the book of Acts together so that we may all come to the understanding of what it is that God has called us to be - His church, the body of Christ in each of our locales, loving God and neighbor in deed, and in truth, to the end that many may know of His salvation.
The text for this weekend is Acts 15:1-41. The theme will be "The Church leads with the Gospel even in disagreements." Questions for you to ponder as you read it this week are: When you have a disagreement with a fellow church member, what do you do? When you have a disagreement with your spouse, kids, or parents, what do you do? How can the approach of the apostles help you?
